Eco-Friendly Gift Wrapping That Won’t Cost the Earth (Literally!)

Gift-giving is a beautiful tradition that allows us to express our love and appreciation but the excitement of unwrapping presents often comes with an unfortunate downside. A large proportion of wrapping paper can't be recycled, as much contains plastic in the form of glitter and laminates, and it has been estimated that just 1kg of wrapping paper is responsible for more than 3kg of CO2 emissions during the production process and 2.3 million pounds of wrapping paper ends up in a landfill every year. However, not all gift wrapping is made equal.

Traditional gift wrap is often glossy, covered in glitter and foil which isn't recyclable, then once you add your plastic ribbons, bows and tapes, it's clear gift-giving can have an ugly environmental impact. Sustainable gift wrapping on the other hand utilises renewable and recycled materials and often involves more ethical labour practices. However, sustainable gift wrapping isn't just about reducing waste - it's about turning something fleeting into a thoughtful, creative and eco-conscious experience. Plus, many sustainable alternatives are more cost-effective and personal, giving your gifts more meaning. This guide will explore how you can make your gift wrapping more eco-friendly without sacrificing creativity or style.

Reusable Fabric Wrapping also known as Furoshiki

A traditional Japanese gift-wrapping cloth that's intended to be reused is by far, in our opinion, the most versatile and elegant method of sustainable gift wrapping. With the use of scarves, handkerchiefs or any cloth you can wrap your gifts beautifully and the lucky recipient can later incorporate the wrapping into their wardrobe - making it part of the gift. Just pick a colour or pattern that matches their style.

Place the item in the centre of the fabric, fold, knot and twist the fabric around the gift to create a stunning presentation.

Upcycled Materials

Yes, you can buy a roll of wrapping paper on your next trip to the supermarket but you'd be surprised by how many potential wrapping materials you have lying around the house. Consider dusting off that old pile of magazines you have stacked in the corner or grab that newspaper you picked up on your way home (that you still haven't read) and give it new life by turning it into a unique gift-wrapping experience.

Measure your gift to determine how many pages you'll need and if you want to get creative like we did, cut out the images that stand out to you and create a fun and interesting design.

Tip 💡 If you still can't go without a big bright bow or spools of ribbon you'll be pleased to know there is a wide range of ribbons and bows made of eco-friendly materials like natural hemp cord, wood pulp or natural cotton or silk if you want something fancier.

Kraft Paper

A simple and sustainable staple, known for being versatile, eco-friendly and budget-conscious. It's recyclable, compostable and fully customisable. You can stamp it, paint it, add a handwritten note or decorate it with dried flowers and twine - you decide! Kraft paper is often available in bulk, making it an affordable and practical alternative to traditional wrapping paper.

Decorating Ideas

If you're not a fan of ribbons and bows consider embracing nature's beauty. Try adding elements like dried flowers or evergreen leaves for a rustic feel or, for the holiday season, cinnamon sticks and dried orange slices to add a warm festive fragrance. The possibilities are endless!

Sustainable gift wrapping doesn't have to be complicated. The key is to rethink how we use materials by choosing wrapping methods and materials that are reusable, recyclable or compostable to drastically reduce the waste caused by traditional gift-wrapping methods whilst presenting a beautiful and meaningful gift
